International Fly Fishing Film Festival 2021

The COVID19 pandemic canceled many of the fishing shows in 2020. Thankfully, in 2021 there are several fishy events online. Last night I watched the International Fly Fishing Film Festival online!

IF4 2021

This year, the International Fly Fishing Film Festival features 10 short films across the globe.  As an all methods, all species angler, I really enjoyed seeing the diversity of species targeted: striped bass, trout, salmon, and even a giant GT.

Metal DIY Projects II

During 2020, I spent a good amount of time (during the hours that I should have been sleeping) designing new DIY projects.  In order to complete these complex projects, I need new tools.  My first investment was in a DEWALT Metal Cutting Saw (DW872) with an after-market base.  Some of my metal projects require stainless steel bolts; but, some projects require the liquefaction of metal via electricity to form joints.  Hence, my second investment was a welder and welding equipment.

Fish360 Eastwood MIG 135 Welder

After reviewing and comparing several welders, I selected the Eastwood MIG 135 because it can weld up to 1/4″ thick steel via flux core on standard 110V electricity.  The welder also comes with a gas regulator to weld up to 3/16″ thick steel via solid MIG wire on standard 110V electricity.  Unlike other welders in this category and price range, the Eastwood MIG 135 can also weld aluminum via spool gun.

Fish360 Eastwood MIG 135 Welder

The most essential equipment for welding is safety gear.  I chose the Eastwood Panoramic View True Color welding helmet.  The auto-darkening, the large 180 degree view, and the viewing clarity is amazing!  You have to be able to see your liquified puddle of metal to make a proper weld.  I also got a pair of welding gloves, a pair of MIG Welding Pliers, and a flame resistant and anti-static welding jacket.

The Eastwood MIG 135 comes with a MIG wire tip and Flux Core wire tip.  These are great to get started; but, it’s best to have replacements available before you need them.  Hence, I ordered a consumables kit.

The Eastwood MIG 135 also comes with a spool of solid MIG wire.  I am planning to weld via flux core, hence I ordered flux core wire and a can of anti-spatter spray to make the post-weld clean up easy.

I have tested my new welding equipment on scrap iron to become comfortable and confident in my equipment and with welding.  The equipment has exceeded my expectations.  In fact, the Eastwood MIG 135 makes welding easy!  Check out Eastwood’s great videos on welding and how to setup the Eastwood MIG 135.

Striped Bass Hot Spots

Along the East coast, there are no shortage of striped bass hot spots. There are no secrete spots. From you mobile phone, you can view satellite images of any section of the Eastern coast line. I know more spots than I can possibly fish on a regular basis.
I fish spots based the spring and fall migrations of striped bass. All the spots I fish are based on my striped bass library. Some of the books in my library are out-of-print. If you want to expand your knowledge of striped bass hot spots, then I would encourage you to buy some of these books while they are still in print.

DIY Leader Wallet

As an all species, all methods angler, I have a lot of leaders.  I have used several different leader wallets.  They work well in my garage.  But!  When I fishing, they get dirty quick.  Cleaning them takes more time than making new leaders.  I hence now use a simple storage solution that works well off, on, and in the water.

Fish360 ZipLock DIY Leader Wallet

I tie all my leaders when I am on terra firma between my trips.  I store each leader in a ZipLock Snack bag.  For Saltwater fishing, for example, I use 40 lb, 60 lb, and 80 lb monofilmaent line for my leaders.  I make them in pink, green, and clear, respectively.  This allows me to quickly know the strength of the line.

I group my leaders by species, strength, and type in a ZipLock Freezer Quart bag.  A ZipLock Freezer Quart bag with ZipLock Snack
bags containing leaders is my Leader Wallet. 🙂

This simple storage solution has a small footprint and provides optimal organization.  But!  Most importantly, this simple storage solution $aves me money and time.  Time is fish!

Fishing Teasers II

I have a love-hate relationship with teasers. My mentor Tony Stetzko landed a 73 lb striped bass from the surf via black fly teaser.  For this reason alone, I have kept coming back to teasers.  I have tried rigging them every common method known.  They all failed my field tests. Hence, I started using a 6” dropper loop at mid-leader.  This method presents the teaser well and prevents the teaser from wrapping around my braided line.  But!  In rough water, the teaser can come off the dropper loop.  In order to prevent this, I now use marine grade heat shrink tubing.

Making this rig is simple. First, make a six inch dropper loop at mid-leader. Second, pass the dropper loop through a three inch length of marine grade heat shrink tubing. And lastly, insert the teaser onto the dropper loop and apply heat to reduce the diameter of the marine grade heat shrink tubing.

Old Glory Ice Tournament 2021

Today I fished the Old Glory Outdoors Ice Fishing Tournament on Quaboag Pond.  This was the first time that I fished this body water.  This was also Old Glory Outdoors‘ first ice fishing tournament.

Fish360 Old Glory Ice Fishing Tournament 2021

Social distancing on the ice was not an issue. Since the pond is relatively shallow with gradually sloping banks, the key to success was finding “deep” water.

Fish360 Old Glory Ice Fishing Tournament 2021

I got my first flag within thirty minutes of setting up my Jack Traps tip-ups. Not a monst’ah fish. But! A fish is a fish. After unhooking and releasing this fish, the wind picked up and the bite died.

When I go ice fishing, I almost always see something new, unusual, or that defies explanation. This trip, was no no exception!

The relentless wind did not make me cold. My high-tech multi-layers kept me warm. The wind just made it uncomfortable to jig while monitoring my tip-ups via peripheral vision. When I fish Old Glory Outdoors‘ second annual ice fishing tournament next year, I will set up along a dropping contour with my new Eskimo QuickFish2 Pop-Up Portable Ice Fishing Shelter. Fish beware!

Metal DIY Projects

During 2020, I spent a good amount of time (during the hours that I should have been sleeping) designing new DIY projects. In order to complete these complex projects, I needed to invest in a metal cutting saw. After much research, I decided to go with the the DEWALT Metal Cutting Saw (DW872). Even though the saw comes with a 14″ metal cutting blade, I purchased a back up blade (DWA7747) so that I can continue my project without interruption, if the blade burns out.

The stock base of the DEWALT Metal Cutting Saw (DW872) is solid. However, since I will be working with long metal stock that I need to cut at 90 and 45 degree angles accurately and safely, I purchased an after-market saw base from John Saunders Machine Works. I have already put this set up use on a DIY project. OMG! The base, the 45 Degree Jig, the Clamp Adapter for DeWalt Fixture Plate, and the Sliding Arm Clamp are all worth their weight in salt!!!

Boat Name

During the build of my custom Gloucester Light Dory, I encountered many challenges. After several prototypes and exploiting colorful words from multiple languages to express my emotions, I conquered each challenge. Ironically, selecting a name for my boat was the most challenging of all. I had no shortage of boat names. For example, “Buoyancy Experiment”, since this was my first boat build. And “Portuguese Power”, since this is a row boat! A clever boat name is not enough to float my boat.

Fish360 Gloucester Light Dory

Argo was the name of an ancient Greek ship with fantastic features and capabilities. My custom Gloucester Light Dory has unique features, yes. But, this is not why I named my boat Argo. During the most critical phase of my boat build, I was leading a globally distributed software test automation team. The name of my team was: Argo. Around the time that I completed my boat build, my team merged with another team, and took on a new name. I hence named my boat Argo.

Al Gags Innovates Soft Plastics Coloring Method

The COVID-19 Pandemic is slowing down the global economy. Every company has had to re-think how they operate. The COVID-19 Pandemic, however, is not slowing down Al Gags [https://www.algagsfishinglures.com/]! On the contrary, Al Gags has expanded his workshop. Al Gags has expanded his Whip-It Fish product line by innovating a new coloring technique that allows him to apply classic wooden plug color patterns to soft plastics.

Fish360 Al Gags Whip-It Fish

Al Gags innovated this novel soft plastics coloring technique as a response to the angling saltwater community. Five classic color patterns are now available (Bunker, Chicken Scratch, Pearl Silver, Super Mack, and Wonderbread) for the 6″, 5″, and 4″ Whip-It Fish. Are classic freshwater color patterns like Trout, Perch, June Bug, and Green Pumpkin next? Drop Al Gangs a line!

Fish360 Al Gags Whip-It Fish

The COVID-19 Pandemic is raising the prices of several products. Producing these classic wooden plug color patterns on soft plastics require more materials and more time. But! Al Gags is making them available at the standard Whip-It Fish prices. Whip-It Fish featuring these classic wooden plug color patterns (which are made in small batches) will eventually make it into our local bait and tackle shops up and down the East coast. The fishing show season is largely uncertain because of COVID-19. Hence, your best option is to order yours today from Al Gags website.

Born to Fish

I met Greg Myerson while I was the President of the Plum Island Surfacaters. Greg and I have a lot of things in common. He played college football. I played high school football. He is a licensed Electrician. I studied electricity at my first high school. He started fishing at an early age for fun. I stared fishing at an early age for food. He bought his first boat with money he raised from trapping. I bought my first bicycle with money I raised from recycling cans. In 2011 he caught an 80+ lb striped bass. In 2011 I caught an 8+ lb striped bass. After reading “Born to Fish”, I know why he and I connected and understood each other without explanation.

Grey Myerson knew from a very early age what he wanted to do: fish. When he was just ten years old, he caught a 50 lb striped bass. In 2010, he caught 3 striped bass over 60 pounds. On August 11, 2011, he caught an 81.88 lb striped bass just after sunset while drifting an eel on a 3-way rig with a RattleSinker at dead high tide (slack outgoing). In 2013 while fishing with his cousin, he caught a 75 lb striped bass, which he harvested after it died during the fight. On the same night, he caught a fish that bottomed out a scaled rated for 90 lbs; he measured it’s length, girth, and calculated its weight to be 106 pounds! He released this fish without hesitation.

Greg’s life path is not ordinary. He overcame significant challenges in his life. These challenges are what propel him to catch the world record striped bass, invent a product that is revolutionizing the fishing industry, and win a deal on Shark Tank. Greg Myerson is an outlier!

Tim Gallagher’s words captures Greg Myerson the man and Greg Myerson the angler. I am a better person and angler for having read Born to Fish.
