DIY Trout Nibbles Storage

I have had great success with Berkley’s PowerBait Trout Nibbles on multiple species. I use to secure the Berkley jar to my belt or kayak via lanyard. This method worked well until the cap of the Berkley jar came undone and my trout nibbles accelerated to Earth via gravity. I hence developed my own storage solution.

Fish360 DIY Trout Nibbles Storage

Making your Trout Nibbles Storage unit is simple. First, secure a length of 80 lb monofilament to the neck of an empty medicine container via improve clinch knot. Second, slide aluminum crimps down each tag end until they reach the neck of the container. Third, wrap the tag ends around each other to form a loop and secure them via aluminum crimps.

I like this simple storage for three reasons. First, the lid does not come undone; you have to push down on the lid to open. Second, the larger capacity; my Trout Nibble Storage solution can store three Berkely PowerBait jars. And lastly, it’s very inexpensive; pennies.

DIY Ice Fishing Propane Bottle Storage Solution

I have a Jiffy Propane auger and a Mr. Heater propane heater for ice fishing, which I rig with propane bottles prior to each trip. On each ice fishing trip, I carry a couple of extra propane bottles in my ice fishing sled. I have been lucky in that my propane bottle have never frozen or exploded on me. Preemptively, I built a simple portable propane storage solution that keeps my propane bottles warm and secure.

Fish360 DIY Ice Fishing Propane Storage

Making this simple storage solution is easy. I made mine in less than one hour.

Fish360 DIY Ice Fishing Propane Storage

First, I made a simple jig out of a recycled MDF sheet. I cut out a simple rectangle based on the inner dimensions of a recycled cooler. I used my Rigid sander to get it to the exact size so that it fits snug in the cooler. I then made two centered and equidistant 4 1/8″ holes using a whole saw bit and my DeWalt drill.

Second, I cut a series of 2″ thick foam insulation form panels using my template, a hacksaw blade, and a 4 1/8″ whole saw bit.  When drilling out the holes in the insulation foam, make sure the drill bit is spinning before it touches the insulation. Also be sure to wear a dust mask and eye protection. Insulation shavings go everywhere! And lastly, I stacked the foam panels into the cooler.

This inexpensive portable propane bottle storage solution works amazingly well. My propane bottle are protected from freezing and propane ping pong.

Mr. Heater Big Buddy Propane Heater

I have ice fished for years without a heat source. I dress in multiple layers of high-tech clothing. My insulated boots are 100% water proof. My ice fishing suit keeps me dry. In recent years, however, the weather has become more extreme and less predictable. I hence purchased the Mr. Heater Big Buddy Propane Heater because of it’s performance, safety, design, and versatility.

Fish360 Mr. Heater

The Mr. Heater Big Buddy Propane Heater can heat up to 400 square feet at three different levels: low (4000 btu), medium (9,000 btu), and high (18,000 btu). I feel safe using it inside my ice fishing shelter because is has a low-oxygen shutoff pilot. I really like how the two 1 lb propane bottles fit securely within the unit. I also like having the ability to connect a larger propane thank via hose adapter (model # F273701). This heater is not just for ice fishing! I use it for family outdoor gatherings during the early spring and late fall and when I am working inside my garage during the winter.

When ice fishing, having a heat source is not a luxury, it’s prudent. Get a Mr. Heater Big Buddy Propane Heater! 😉Facebooktwitterlinkedin

DIY Bobber Stop

A bobber stop is a brilliant device that allows anglers to quickly set and reset the depth of their presentation when fishing a sliding bobber.  With a few simple tools and inexpensive materials, you can make your own bobber stop.

Fish360 DIY Bobber Stop

First, cut a bobber stop disc out of a soft rubber material via single hole paper punch.  For example, I used the soft rubber sleeve from a spent pen.

Fish360 DIY Bobber Stop

Second, make a hole in the center of the bobber stop disc.  For example, I used the end of a straightened out paper clip.

Fish360 DIY Bobber Stop

Third, pass the wire though the hole in the bobber stop disc.  For example, I used a fly tying bobbin threader

Commercial bobber stops are readily available at reasonable prices.  I prefer to make my own at $0.00. 🙂Facebooktwitterlinkedin

Ice Jigging Kastmasters

Kastmasters are one of my favorite metals to fish because of their versatility and ability to catch multiple species.  I have been fishing them in open water for freshwater and saltwater species for years, with great success.  Recently, I have started jigging them through the ice.  As they penetrate the water column, they reflect visible light and thereby provide bursts of flash.  Having flash down low can make all the difference between catching and getting skunked.

Fish360 Ice Jigging Kastmasters

During one trip, I was jigging a 1/4 oz Kastmaster in hole that was centered between two holes with tip-ups.  I have caught multiple species through the ice by jigging Kastmasters; but this was the first time that jigging a Kastmater through the ice out-fished live bait!

Fish360 Ice Jigging Kastmasters

I keep my ice fishing rigs simple.  First, I replace the treble hook with a single hook.  Second, I I secure a segment of fluorocarbon line to my ice braid via Crazy Alberto Knot.  Third, I secure my 1/4 oz Kastmater [https://amzn.to/3g1V0s9] to my flurocarbon leader via double surgeons loop knot.

Kastmasters are intended to be casted and retrieved. But! Fish do not follow the rules.  Jig Kastmasters through the ice!Facebooktwitterlinkedin

DIY Ice Fishing Sled Tip Up Rack

I ice fishing with tip-ups because they are the most efficient way to cover lots of water simultaneously.  The acceleration of adrenaline when a flag is sprung and racing for the sky makes me sprint across the ice without fear of falling.  My only complaint about tip-ups is storage.  After experimenting with several tip-up storages solutions, I have built a custom Tip-Up Rack for my ice fishing sled.

Fish360 DIY Tip-Up Rack

The journey from concept to completion had several prototypes and adjustments.  The final design is surprisingly simple.  There are no moving parts and minimal space is taken up inside my ice fishing sled.  During my first ice fishing trip, the 100% water proof rack performed perfectly!

Fish360 DIY Tip-Up Rack

The only disadvantage of this for-life rack is the build process.  The multi-step build procedure requires several specialized power tools and knowledge of working with epoxy, fiberglass cloth, and epoxy fillets.  An alternative build procedure is to use 1/4″ PVC sheets and 1″ thick PVC boards.  This alternative is more expensive that the cut-off wood stock that I used and it will produce a heavier rack.Facebooktwitterlinkedin

DIY Wacky O-Ring II

My first DIY Wacky O-Ring uses heat shrink tubing.  This solution works well.  However, if heat is applied too long, it can melt the Senko, which is no bueno.  I now use recycled rubber grips from spent pens.

Fish360 DIY Wacky O-Ring II

Making Wacky O-Rings from recycled rubber pen grips has one step: cut a 1/4″ wide ring from the end of the soft rubber grip via utility knife.  I use my DIY Wacky O-Ring Rigger to secure the DIY Wacky O-Rings to my Senkos.

Fish360 DIY Wacky O-Ring II

This second generation DIY Wacky O-Ring has several advantages.  First, it costs $0.00.  Second, it is very easy to make.  Third, it does not damage the Senko, which can happen when applying heat during to shrink the tubing on generation one.  Forth, it provides a stronger grip on the Senko than commercial O-Rings because it has a wider surface area.  And lastly, it allows the hook to be perpendicular to the Senko, which increases your hook-up ratio.Facebooktwitterlinkedin

Steve Medeiros

Last month we lost a pillar from our community: Steve Medeiros (1948 – 2021). Steve founded and built the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association from the ground up for 23 years. His work ethic and ability to bring people together are leadership qualities to be emulated.

Steve MedeirosPic 1

When I was the President of the Plum Island Surfcasters, I reached out to Steve to add my club as an affiliated club. I was expecting an artificially complex bureaucratic process. Not. The PISC has been a proud affiliated club ever since. Thank you Steve!

RISAA Affiliated Organizations

During the early years of my company (E-Fish360, LLC), my ideas exceeded my profits. I reached out to Steve to exhibit at the New England Saltwater Fishing Show with the hope of getting more exposure and expanding my network. I was expecting to go into the red. Not. Steve offered me very possible discount (Early Bird Special, First Time Exhibitor, and RISAA Member) so that the cost would not exceed my shoe-string budget. Thank you Steve!!

E-Fish360 RISAA Booth

After I created my first fishing seminar, I reached out to Steve to present at the New England Saltwater Fishing Show []. I was not sure what to expect because I had never presented at a fishing show before. I shared my slides with the RISAA board and described my presentation style. After my request was approved, I was expecting the smallest stage at the show. Not. I presented my first fishing seminar on the main stage of the New England Saltwater Fishing Show. Thank you Steve!!!

Fish360 RISAA Seminar

As I talk to business owners in our community, I now know that my experiences were not unique. Steve collaborated with several clubs on a regular basis and helped many companies “get off the ground” by providing them booths and stage time at the New England Saltwater Fishing Show. Thank you Steve!!!!

As a member of the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association, I am delighted to see the organization continue navigating towards Steve’s vision. I have full confidence in Greg Vespe, the new Executive Director. I believe in Greg’s ability to build and expand on Steve’s exemplary work so that RISAA can continue to adapt to the needs of our community and our aquatic species for the next 23 years and beyond.Facebooktwitterlinkedin

Cuttyhunk 2021

I fish Cuttyhunk island each year because the diverse fishing spots on this small island is unmatched. I missed 2020 because of the COVI19 global pandemic. Getting the Pfiser vaccine has given me the protection and freedom to fish with friends. This past weekend I had the opportunity to fish Cuttyhunk with the Massachusetts Striped Bass Association (MSBA). Being back on Cuttyhunk felt amazing!

Fish360 Cuttyhunk 2021

On the first night, I found a new spot. While perched on my new rock, I made a bomb of a cast between chest-breaking waves. At nearly the end of my retrieve…BANG! Fish on!! At first, I literally could not move the fish. Eventually I managed to surface the fish….OMG….it was HUGE! The fish then started swimming against the lateral current and pulling line like there was no 40 lbs of drag on my ZeeBaas reel. As soon as the fish passed over a submerged rock with seaweed tentacles, my line went slack. A fellow MSBA member saw the fish!! I am still grieving over the loss of this mont’ah strip’ah that I lost on a Linesider69 dart’ah. I may need therapy.

Fish360 Cuttyhunk 2021

With the adrenaline flowing through me at high speed, I continued casting every plug in my bag. Nothing! I then reached down and pulled out a High Hook B2 from my DIY Side Aram. On my fish cast, fish on! I reeled in this fish as fast as I dared while angling my rod to avoid that fish-releasing rock with seaweed tentacles. Hoisting the fish using my 80# Ande leader up onto my new rock, required Cirque du Soleil balance.

Fish360 Cuttyhunk 2021

The MSBA have been coordinating and hosting fishing events since 1950. Their work is exemplary. For this trip, they rented the entire Cuttyhunk Fishing Club. We ate like kings and queens. We fished like we had no food in the fridge. We shared fishing and life stories while drinking Portuguese grape juice after our trips under the blanket of night.

Fish360 Cuttyhunk 2021

The conversations were delicious! The fishing was fantastic!! The catching was challenging!!! I would not have it any other way!!!! I am stocking up on Linesider69 dart’ahs High Hook B2s in preparation for my Cuttyhunk 2022 trip. Striped bass at “Heartbreak Rock” beware!Facebooktwitterlinkedin
