The Science of Chunking: Hooks

Anglers who sling chunks of bait from the surf have no lack of hooks to choose from.  Circle hooks and J-hooks the two most widely exploited hooks for propelling chunks into the surf.

Fish360 Owner Hook

Both hook styles will hook and land fish.  But, for chunking, I find that in-line circle hooks outperform J-hooks.  The wider gap in a circle hook “hangs” a chuck better.  My go-to circle hook is the Owner SSW in-line circle hook (8/0 or 9/0 depending on the size of the chunk).

After I dress my Owner SSW in-line circle hook with a tasty chunk, I use a small elastic to secure the chunk.  I use red elastics for mahaden and herring, blue elastics for mackerel chunks, and tan elastics for clam chunks (or the entire clam!)

Fish360 Owner Hook

The key thing to keep in mind when chunking with a circle hook, is not to set the hook!  When you feel the fish on you bait, lower your rod tip.  As the fish swims away with the bait in its mouth, the slack line will go away proportionalitly.  When the line will become tight, crank the reel slowly: this will set the in-line circle hook in the corner of the fish’s mouth.

Off-set point circle hooks work equally well to in-line point circle hooks. However, they tend to cause more gut hooks because as the hook travels from the fish’s gullet up to the corner of it’s mouth, the off-set point tends to snag the fish’s internal organs.

I use in-line circle hooks for chucking because they perform better than J-hooks.  The fact that they conserve fish is a welcomed bonus.

AquaSkinz Blackthunder Gloves

A friend once asked me: “You fish at night on top of slippery rocks in the ocean…are you crazy?”  I replied: “No. I am systematic and confident because I use great gear like the AquaSkinz Black Thunder gloves.”

Fish360 AquaSkinz Blackthunder Gloves

These gloves provide protection from the elements and the finger cutting tendencies of braided line. After three seasons, the Kevlar index figure is still going strong.  Now that’s quality.

When I am fishing, the gloves feel great and I often forget that I have them on. They actually enhance my grip, which in a hostile marine environment makes all the difference!  For example, I once plucked a 15 pound bluefish by it’s tale with my right hand out of shallow water and smacked it with my left hand when it got to frisky.  😉

If you fish saltwater with spinning gear, the AquaSkinz Black Thunder gloves are required gear. They will help you fish longer and safely without breaking the bank.

Mojo Plugs

What is your mojo plug?  This simple question will not only break the deafening silence in a room, but also retrieve a multitude of different responses.  The bottom line is that they are all correct!  Why?  Because a mojo plug is nothing more than a plug that you have confidence in.  Confidence built up from the plug’s proven ability to seduce fish into striking.  My mojo plug is the 8″ / 2 oz black cherry junior needlefish from Lemire’s Plugworks.  Why?

Those scars are not from bluefish!  The stripped bass who visit Block Island cannot resist themselves!

Having one mojo plug is a risky proposition.  Once you identify your very own mojo plug, stock up on that plug. Trust me! 😉

Montauk Tackle Company Performance Fishing Shirts

As anglers, we tend to focus on must-have and fish-catching gear.  There is nothing wrong with this.  All good anglers do.  But, we should not lose sight of gear that enhance our fishing.  The Mountauk Tackle Company for example has performance fishing shirts for men and women that are not only functional, but stylish!

Fish360 Montauk Tackle Company Performance Fishing Shirts

These shirts have some impressive features.  The SPF 50 feature in particular is brilliant!  I have a science background.  Climate change is a reality.  Protecting your skin from then sun’s damaging rays while on the water is not an option.  It’s a must.

The moisture wicking feature will keep you dry and cool while fishing.  Leave your cotton shirts at home.  The anti-microbial and the stain release features are novel.  I have not seen these in any other performance fishing shirt.  I’ll take them!

My Montauk Tackle Company shirts are part of my fishing gear.  They do not hook fish.  But, they protect my skin and keep me dry and comfortable when I am fishing.  I now fish longer.

Before you head out this summer to fish from shore, boat, kayak, canoe, or SUP, be sure to pick up your very own high performance fishing shirt (Made in USA) from Montauk Tackle Company.    You will thank me.  Trust me!

New England Saltwater Fishing Show ~ 2013

I exhibited at the New England Saltwater Fishing Show earlier this month.  This was my second year as an exhibitor and my first year as a seminar and work shop speaker.

Fish360 RISAA New England Saltwater Fishing Show

The new Fish360.net features that I discussed during my seminar will be available soon!  Be sure to read the next newsletter. (Use the contact form to join the Fish360.net newsletter.)

Yes!  That is a Montauk Tackle Comapny performance fishing shirt.  It’s fashionable and fucntional.  And Made In U.S.A.!

One of the things that I like about the New England Saltwater Fishing Show is the booths.  This year in particular there were many fishy booths!  A few stand out in my mind.

The AqauSkinz booth was full of well designed and fishconomic products.  I cannot wait to field test my new Elite Hunter Pro Series surf belt and Cobra plug bag.

CTS rods had a cool looking booth.  I am looking forward to cast my CTS Cape Cod Canal custom rod that is being built for me by Dante Soriente from RH Custom Rods.

The Lemire’s Pugworks booth was decorated with new plugs and fishy patterns.  If fish could talk, they would say: “Yum!”  Al Lemire told me that his small bait mimicking plugs seduce striped bass in saltwater and large mouth bass in fresh water!  Now that’s worth writing about!!

The Jay Jigs booth had some impressive gear.  I am looking forward to trolling some sea worms this season from the pointy end of my new tube-and-worm rig.  Stay tuned.

The Bill Hurley Lures both has some seriously fishy jig heads and soft plastics.  I cannot wait to jig them in the Cape Cod Canal using my new CTS Canal Custom rod.

The On The Water booth is a must visit booth.  I always join the Stiper Cup.  But, this year I also renewed my New England Edition and New York / New Jersey Edition subscriptions and got a free LiveTarget lure.

To all who attended my seminar and visited my boot: Thank you!  I enjoyed meeting you and chatting with you on all things fishy.   I am looking forward to exhibiting and presenting at next years show.  You will want to see the new features my team is currently building into Fish360.net. Trust me ! 😉

Cabelas 12 Rod Deluxe Ice Case

I am an equal opportunity ice angler.  I enjoy targeting fish below hard water via tip-ups and jigging rods.  This presented me with a unique tackle storage and travel problem.  I am happy to say that I have now solved this problem!  Thanks to the Cabelas 12-Rod Deluxe Ice Case. 😉

The case has several noteworthy features.  But, the feature that sold me was the ample storage.  I can fit my Jack Traps tip-ups and my St. Croix rods into the three main compartments.

The bag also has three additional compartments on the sides for tackle storage.  And, the two shoulder straps help to “balance” the bag on your shoulder as you traverse and negotiate your way over snow and ice.

I store my Jack Traps tip-ups, St. Croix rods, terminal tackle, and lures in myCabelas ice case during the off-season.  This keeps my gear dust and dirt free.  When it’s time to go ice fishing, I just grab my bag an sled.  That was easy! 😉

Maine Smelt Fishing

Ice fishing for smelt is a New England tradition.  Maine has a great smelt fishery.  I recently fished one of Maine’s smelt camps.

Fish360 Maine Smelt Fishing

Sonnys has 4 and 6 person shanties available. Each shanty is heated.  You will not be cold!  But, I strongly suggest dressing in layers and add or remove layers as necessary.  A good pair of boots and creepers will keep your feet dry, warm, and standing vertical on the hard water.

A popular method for winching up smelt is drop lines.  You bait all the lines with asmall piece of sea worm and drop them to various depths.  This gives you a “wall” of suspended bait throughout the water column.  A local Maine smelter told me that as soon as the line shakes, set the hook! And that if the line is moving left or right, the smelt is about the drop the bait.

Fish360 Maine Smelt Fishing

The drop line method works.  But, during my trip, I had more success with mySt. Croix ice fishing rod (model: Premier Ice PIR28M). I landed 20 smelt on my rod to 1 smelt via drop line.  The rod is so sensitive that I can feel the smelt sniffing my presentation as I vertical jig it.

Ice fishing for smelt is a great way to get out with friends and harvest some great eating fish.  For a smelt recipe, check out Cooking The Catch by Dave “Pops” Masch.  From the water to the plate.  There is nothing fresher than that.  Go smelting! 😉

Frabill Ice Fishing Suit

A friend once told me “There is no such thing as bad weather. Just bad clothing.”.  When it comes to ice fishing, bad weather is expected.  Bad clothing is not an option.  I opted for the Frabill ice fishing suit from Glen’s Army Navy Store because of its many technical advances.

Fish360 Frabill Ice Fishing Suit

First, the suite is very functional and non-restrictive.  Drilling holes and setting tip-ups happens with ease.

Second, the suit is well built and insulated.  During a recent ice fishing tournament, the temperature was well below freezing and the wind was perpetually blowing.  Some anglers left early because they felt cold.  My Frabill ice fishing suit kept me warm the whole tournament!

Third, the suit has no lack of pockets!  During my last ice fishing trip, I inserted my gear into my pockets and still had some pockets empty.  One day I may fill all 12 pockets.

Fourth, the loop on the outside of the jacket is really great to hang gear.  I hang my The Fish Grip lip griper for quick access during a FLAG UP!

Fifth, the padded knees are priceless!  How many times do you get down on one or both of your knees while on the hard and cold ice?  Exactly!

Sixth, the value of the front zipper on the bibs is only appreciated when Nature calls.  This technical advancement is priceless. 😉

Having ice finished in bad weather with bad clothing, I can fully appreciate all the technical advances of the Frabill ice fishing suit.  I am very happy with it and highly recommend it!

Ice Fishing: Working the Water Column

I fished a local ice fishing tournament this weekend.  The temperature was below freezing.  The wind was howling.  And the bite was slow.  I had a fabulous time!

When I arrived, I scanned the ice and quickly developed a strategy.  I set up my tip-ups in a “straight” line, with each successive tip-up penetrating deeper into the water column.

Fish360 Ice Fishing

From base camp, tip-ups 1 and 2 were in the shallower portions of the water column.  Tip-ups 3, 4, and 5 were in the deeper portions of the water column.  This layout helped to identify where the hungry fish were lurking.  Tip-ups 4 and 5 hooked ravenous yellow perch of respectable size.

Fish360 Ice Fishing

I have a new found respect for yellow perch.  After I set the hook, the fish shook its head and swam from side to side, the whole way up.  What an aggressive species!

I had a fabulous time for several reasons.  First, I was warm the entire time, complements of my new gear.  Second, I found and caught fish.  And third, I made some new friends. 😉
